Dietetics is...

. . . . . translating the sciences of nutrition and food to promote good health. Dietetics covers a wide range of options for the student who is interested in applying nutrition and food science to benefit people. A career in dietetics offers challenging responsibilities working in hospitals and nursing homes, as well as in schools, public health agencies, the food industry, research labs, and clinics.

Does Dietetics fit your interests?

If you enjoy science, are interested in food, and like working with people, you'll like Dietetics.
Enjoying science is important because, in addition to nutritional sciences and food science, you will study bacteriology, physiology, chemistry, and biochemistry.

An interest in food is important because you will help people select and obtain food to nourish their bodies in health or disease. You may also manage the preparation and service of food for groups of people.
Working with people is a major part of the job, usually in a teaching or supervisory role. You may teach individuals or groups how to improve their eating behavior. You may hire and train employees in food production as a food and nutrition manager. For more information, see Careers in Dietetics.

What will a major in Dietetics do for me?

The Didactic Program in Dietetics provides you with course work needed for a BS degree and a career in dietetics. Course work in the natural sciences, Nutrition and Food Science will give you an understanding of normal nutrition and medical nutrition therapy.

Upon graduation, you will be eligible to apply for a dietetic internship. At the completion of the BS and the internship program you are eligible to take the American Dietetic Association (ADA) examination leading to certification as a Registered Dietitian (RD).  Admission to post-baccalaureate supervised practice programs is competitive, as spaces are limited. Selection criteria include GPA, work experience, and references.  For more information, see Improving Your Chances for a Dietetic Internship.
