-Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Training in Nutrition-

  Fall Research Symposia

Starting in September of 2007, MANTP will hold an annual research symposia for its trainees and trainers which will be organized by the research focus groups every year; topics that bridge focus groups will be encouraged.  The topic for 2007 is “Recent Advances in the Understanding the Treatment and Etiology of Type II Diabetes” was organized by the Metabolism and Metabolic Disease and the Aging Focus Groups.  This symposia, partially funded by the Department of Nutritional Sciences, will expose MANTP trainees to cutting-edge research in applied and molecular aspects of nutrition and allow them to present their research findings and have them evaluated by outside experts.  In this half-day symposia, three speakers from outside UW-Madison will speak and one or two selected current or recent former trainee will present their work.  Confirmed outside speakers for 2007 are Dr. Robert Rizza MD (Mayo Clinic), Christopher Newgard PhD (Duke University) and and Philipp Scherrer PhD (Univ. of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center). In addition, former MANTP trainee Jessica (Byers) Flowers will also present her work while a graduate student in the laboratory of trainer Dr. Attie.  Ample opportunity will be provided for trainees to interact with the invited speakers and MANTP trainers.
