MANTP

Molecular and Applied Nutrition Training Program
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

-Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Training in Nutrition-

  Executive Committee

Program Administration
Dr. Ney is the current director of the MANTP.  Dr. Eisenstein will replace Dr. Ney on July 1, 2008.  Dr. Ney directed the training program for 10 years (1998-2008) and will continued on the Executive Committee.  Prior to Dr. Ney’s term, this training program was directed by Dr. Suttie (1993-1998).

Current Program Director:
Dr. Ney is Professor of Nutritional Science, a member of the IGPNS Human Nutrition Emphasis Group and current PI/Director of this training grant (2003-2008). Dr. Ney has a strong administrative background as former Chair of Nutritional Sciences, former Director of the IGPNS and Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics. Drs. Eisenstein and Ney have a strong working relationship including the 7 years that Dr. Ney was Chair of Nutritional Sciences and Dr. Eisenstein Chaired the Graduate Admissions.  Dr. Ney received her PhD (1986) in Nutrition from UC-Davis. She has considerable research experience and success at the interface of nutritional biochemistry and biomedical science, a key aspect of the cross disciplinary MANTP program. She has trained 8 doctoral students, 2 postdoctoral investigators and 4 M.S. students.  Of the 10 doctoral students, 5 are faculty, 1 is a research scientist, 3 are in industry and 1 will be starting his postdoctoral position this summer.  Three students are in training.

Program Director as of July 2008:
Dr. Eisenstein is a Professor of Nutritional Sciences, and has been on the faculty at UW-Madison since 1991. Dr. Eisenstein has strong scientific credentials in biochemical and molecular nutrition.  He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from the UW-Madison working on regulation of protein synthesis.  His postdoctoral experience was on hormonal regulation of casein expression (Cell Biology Dept; Baylor College of Medicine) and molecular aspects of iron metabolism (MIT).  His research is cross disciplinary including biochemical, biophysical, molecular and genetic studies in cell culture, animals, other (yeast) models and purified systems.

Dr. Eisenstein has extensive experience in training pre- and postdoctoral researchers. He has mentored 3 postdoctoral researchers; one was an MANTP trainee, 2 are Assoc. Professors and 1 is an Asst. Professor.  He has mentored or is mentoring 11 graduate students: 4 of which have obtained the PhD and have gone on to academic postdocs (3) and faculty positions (1); 4 are currently in training; and 3 received the M.S. degree. Three of these students were or are MANTP trainees; 2 received the PhD and 1 is in training.

Administrative Structure:
The successful operation of the MANTP relies heavily on an expert Executive Committee. The Executive Committee will be comprised of 5 faculty trainers:  Dr. Eisenstein, program director as of July 2008, Dr. Schoeller, coordinator for predoctoral trainees; Dr. Clagett-Dame, coordinator for postdoctoral trainees; Dr. Ney, program director until July 2008 and then trainee professional development coordinator; and Dr. Eide, minority affairs coordinator. Drs. Schoeller, Clagett-Dame and Eide description are listed below.  Drs. Ney and Eisenstein have descriptions in the previous paragraphs.

Dr. Schoeller is Professor of Nutritional Sciences, Chair of the Human Nutrition Emphasis Group of the IGPNS.  He brings extensive administrative experience.  He was recruited from the University of Chicago where he Chaired the Committee on Human Nutrition and Nutritional Biology, an inter-disciplinary doctoral training program in nutritional biochemistry, for 5 years.  He also chaired the PhD selection committee at the University of Chicago for 10 years and served on the doctoral curriculum committee for 12 years.  Dr. Schoeller is former President of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and former member of the American Society for Nutrition executive board.  Dr. Schoeller received his B.S. in Chemistry from the UW-Milwaukee and his PhD in Chemistry from Indiana University. He has trained 10 doctoral students and 6 postdoctoral scientists.  Four former mentees are faculty, 5 are academic researchers, 2 are industrial researchers, 3 are postdoctoral scientists, 1 is teaching and 1 is self employed.  Dr. Schoeller currently is training 3 students.

Dr. Clagett-Dame is a Professor of Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences and member of the Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition Emphasis Group. She brings important linkages to the Biochemistry department and the Integrated Program in Biochemistry (IPiB) as well as experience in the biomedical industry; she previously worked for Abbott Labs in the Neuroscience Research Division. She has mentored 5 doctoral students, two postdoctoral scientists and currently has 6 doctoral students in training.  She has served on the IGPNS and Biochemistry graduate admissions committees and has been active in various graduate student recruiting activities for the IGPNS, Biochemistry and Pharmacy graduate programs. Dr. Clagett-Dame has taken a very active role in recruiting MANTP postdoctoral applicants.

Dr. Eide is Professor of Nutritional Sciences and member of the Biochemical and Molecular Emphasis Group.  He Chairs the graduate school Biological Sciences Fellowship Committee and is a member of the IGPNS Graduate Admissions Committee. He was recruited from the University of Missouri in 2004.  His administrative experience at Missouri included Chair of the Life Sciences Fellowship Committee, Director of Graduate Studies for Nutritional Sciences and Chair of the Genetics Area Program Graduate Admissions Committee.  Dr. Eide received his PhD (Molecular Biology) from UW-Madison followed by postdoctoral experience at MIT and the Univ. of Utah. Dr. Eide has mentored 4 doctoral students and 8 postdoctoral researchers.  Four of these 12 mentees are faculty, 3 are in industry and the remaining 5 are in postdoctoral positions.  Dr. Eide has 3 predoctoral and 2 postdoctoral students in training.
