Nutritional Sciences Exercise/Dietary Fat Study

Exercise and Dietary Fat Research Study

The UW Department of Nutritional Sciences is studying the effect of moderate intensity aerobic cycling exercise in combination with a high fat diet on how much fat your body burns.

Q: What is the purpose of this research study?
A: We are interested in knowing whether exercise, combined with a high fat diet, will affect how much fat the body burns for energy. We are also interested in knowing whether the type of dietary fat – monounsaturated or saturated – will affect how much fat the body burns.

Q: Who can participate?
A: Volunteers must be of normal body weight, healthy, non-smoking, between the ages of 18-34, and must not exercise more than 3 hours per week. Women must have a regular menstrual cycle.

Q: What is “normal body weight?”
A: Normal weight is being defined as a body mass index between 20 and 30. Check your BMI

Q: Are there any other eligibility criteria?
A: There are several other criteria to participate in the study, and you can call 608-261-1902 or email nutritionstudy@nutrisci.wisc.edu to find out if you qualify.

Q: What do I need to do to participate?
A:

Q: What is a metabolic room?
A: A metabolic room is like a normal room within the hospital, but it allows researchers to measure the amount of oxygen a person uses and the amount of carbon dioxide a person produces. This information can be used to determine the amount of fat and carbohydrate a person uses for energy. The room contains a window, bed, sink, toilet, computer, TV, and DVD player. Internet and local phone access are also provided.

Q: Will I learn from participating in this research study?
A: You will learn your resting metabolic rate, maximal oxygen consumption, and body composition.

Q: Will I be paid for participating in this study?
A: You will receive compensation that totals $3000 for completion of the study: $50 for a screening visit; $550 for the first hospital stay; $600 the second hospital stay; $700 for the third hospital stay; $1150 for the fourth hospital stay.
