Dietary Protein Intake Validation Study

UW-Madison Dept. of Nutritional Sciences is conducting a research study to test a new method for assessing protein intake profiles, which may be useful as an objective and sensitive biomarker to differentiate the fraction of animal and vegetable protein in an individual diet.

Q: What is the purpose of this research study?

A: We are interested in testing the accuracy of a biomarker method to measure how much of the protein you eat is from animal products and how much is from plants.

Q: Who can participate?

A: Young and healthy volunteers who do not have a history of metabolic disease, or are not taking prescription medications for altered metabolic conditions.

Q: What is metabolic disease?

A: Metabolic disease includes thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease such as hyperlipidemia or high blood pressure.

Q: Are there any other eligibility criteria?

A: There are several other criteria to participate in the study. Please call (608) 263-5477 or email dliu@nutrisci.wisc.edu to find out if you qualify.

Q: If I decide to participate, what will I be asked to do?

A:

  • Complete 2 visits which requires about 3 hours.
  • Provide a detailed diet history for the past month.
  • Provide a sample of blood, spit and hair.
  • More detail about these visits can be found below in our informed consent form.

Q: What will I get out of participating in this research study?

A:

  • Gain knowledge of your own dietary pattern.
  • Gain knowledge of your daily protein consumption.
  • Receive $35 for participating in this study upon completion of the visits.

Q: When and where are the study visits held?

A: Study visits are held at Dept. of Nutritional Sciences on UW-Madison campus. There are a total of 2 visits requiring a total of about 3 hours of your time.

  • Visit 1: This visit is at the beginning of the study, and is for confirming eligibility, recording body height and weight, and obtaining informed consent. You will be asked to fill out a food frequency questionnaire to provide detailed diet history. This visit will last about 1.5 hours.
  • Visit 2: This visit is after completion of diet history. Hair and spit sample will be collected. A blood sample will be drawn by clinical phlebotomist. This visit will last about 1.5 hours.

Q: Where do I get more information?
